Measurement
① FIRE BREAKS (Chapter 4 of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act)
1.1 FIRE BREAKS is an essential tool in the combating of veld fires and is a minimum requirement prescribed by LAW. As any tool it is mostly useless on its own and only becomes effective if made and placed correctly, and used judiciously during operations.
② WIDTH AND POSITIONING OF FIRE BREAKS
2.1 Has the landowner prepared for firebreaks of a minimum width of 3 meters without combustible material along all boundaries? Where crown fires are a possibility, shrubs and grass must be slashed to a height of no more than10 cm for another 4 meters. Ensure that clearing is right up to the trunks of trees to prevent the fire from burning the trunks or climbing up the trees.
2.2 Does the internal firebreaks divide the farm into areas of not more than 200 ha. These firebreaks must be a minimum of 3 meters wide and may be part of the internal road network. These are necessary to ensure that in the case of a wildfire a judicious back burn will prevent the burning of bigger areas.
2.3 Exceptional trees must be saved. Ensure that firebreaks are not interrupted and must be cut around the tree/s at a width of at least 3 meters.
2.4 At worst the fire breaks must at least be of a standard to allow travel by 4x4 vehicles. In mountainous and rocky areas it is acceptable if it can only be accessed on foot.
2.5 Where a boundary fire break deviates of necessity from the farm boundary, adjoining landowners must record their mutual agreement to the irregular placement in writing. A signed copy of the map indicating the arrangement on scale must accompany this application.

④ MINIMUM SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
4.1 Are all fire fighting personnel assisting at the fire appropriately dressed, like in the suggested cotton or wool clothing, and leather boots?
